The basic of using a sandblaster

Artificial way of sandblasting has been patented in 1870. by Benjamin Tilghman. The benefits of using a sandblaster are that it gives a smooth, even and clean finish without half of the effort that would have to be applied if using sandpaper.

Over the years, sand has been used as a particle for the process of artificial sandblasting, it was no regular sand, but sand that was sieved to uniform size. However, this particular process produced silica dust. Silica dust can be very dangerous if inhaled for prolonged periods of time, moreover it can lead to silicosis. Silicosis is a lung disease that leads to inflammation and scarring in upper lobes of the lungs.

Nowadays sandblasting must be performed in an environment that is sufficiently ventilated, while wearing a protective mask and clothes. There are other types of materials that can be used in sandblasting process such as metal pellets, glass beads, steel shots and grit and powdered abrasives of different kinds to name a few.
